FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When is the trip?
Coaches roll out of the UK on Friday, 3rd January 2020 and arrive back on Saturday, 11th. Term starts on the 13th.
How much is the trip?
The base price of the trip will be revealed soon. The figure will be a little more than last year, which is largely due to Brexit-related costs.
SO WHAT DO I GET?
This includes transport, accommodation, lift pass, entry to our Opening Night Party, access to our exclusive après and other offers throughout the resort. Extras such as lessons, experiences or tickets to our Palatinalps Presents series can be added after the initial booking-on process.
MY FRIEND’S JUST GRADUATED. CAN THEY GET IN ON THIS TOO?
Absolutely! Durham alumni will be welcomed back with open arms; Durham students and alumni are also able to bring non-Durham guests on the trip.
where is the trip this year?
We could tell you…but we’d have to kill you.
NO, BUT SERIOUSLY.
Trip launch will happen on the final day of Freshers’ Week, Sunday 6th October. Stay locked.
who’S RUNNING the SHOW?
CAN WE TALK?
We try to provide you with as much information as possible on our Facebook and Instagram, but Palatinalps can throw up questions, whether it’s your first trip or your fourth. We’ve gathered responses to the most common queries here; if you’re still stuck you can either drop us a message any time through Facebook or Instagram or get in touch with an individual member of the Committee on email. If you know it’s Wasteland you’re after, you can contact them directly via email if their helpdesk isn’t cutting the mustard.
When DOES booking open?
Booking for the trip will open on Tuesday 5th November. Booking for events, merchandise and other extras will open soon after this.
How does IT ALL work?
To try to deal with the stress that booking can cause, we’re launching a new speedy booking process this year! This means that booking onto the trip will be much faster, and queueing time will be much shorter.
For the initial booking, all you need to do is go through a few simple steps to confirm you want to attend and pay a £100 deposit. Nothing else will be available to book at this time – you will be able to book events, order merch and order any other extras soon after. The total trip cost will be payable at a later date.
Do I book events and other extras when I book my place on the trip?
No – you will book these soon after you have booked your place.
Do I have to pay for the trip when I book?
No, you only have to pay the deposit when you make your initial booking. We will have a full payment deadline a few weeks later in the term.
How do I make sure my place is secure?
If you pay your deposit at booking then your place is locked in. Just remember to pay the total cost by the later deadline!
what happens if I or (one of my friends) don’t get a place?
We aim to create enough places on the trip to satisfy demand, and as a rule we’re successful. If there’s exceptional demand, we may be able to open a waiting list for extra places.
What if I don’t know anyone going?
In fact, you probably know lots of people coming on Palatinalps, the kinds of people you chat to on your corridor or play College Sport with but don’t yet know well enough to ask about their holiday plans. Given that around 15% of Durham students go on Palatinalps, the chances of you not knowing anyone are slim.
More importantly, though, Palatinalps is the perfect place to meet people. Come along to our pre-trip socials, organised by College Reps, to find out who else in College is going. The coach journey’s the ultimate icebreaker, and a boogie at the Opening Night Party followed by a few days’ skiing is sure to seal a lifelong friendship.
Do I have to be a Durham student?
Students and alumni can bring non-Durham students as guests on the trip!
do you have a cancellation policy?
It’s sad but it happens. If you need to cancel your trip, get in touch with email@example.com. If you cancel 42 days or more before departure, you’ll lose your deposit; from then on, you will forfeit a progressively higher trip cost as well.
does my booking include equipment rental?
No, but this can easily be booked online. Wasteland negotiate the best deals on rental for Durham students, and we use the Prefitted service (see below) to make sure that the process is a smooth as possible.
HOW DO I KEEP TRACK OF MY BOOKING?
To make a booking, you’ll need an account with Wasteland Ski. To check your booking, simply log in to your account.
What if I can’t ski?! is it still worth me coming?
Yes! If you’ve never skied before or have only done it a couple of times, Palatinalps is the perfect trip for you! It’s a great opportunity to develop your skills in a low-pressure environment at a uniquely low cost.
Every year over a third of the students on Palatinalps are beginners, and we always choose resorts with plenty of beginner-level slopes that are easily accessible.
Is it worth getting lessons?
Again – yes! We really recommend that beginners take lessons. It’s the best and quickest way to pick up the basics and gain confidence quickly on the slopes, and get the most out of your ski trip. We can’t stress enough that you will struggle to find better value lessons anywhere else. They’re long enough for you to refine your technique, but won’t take up your whole day, so you’ll still have plenty of time for extra-curricular activities…
What lesson options are available?
Exact rates and packages are being confirmed with our in-resort partner ski schools at the moment, but we’re hoping to provide everything from heavily discounted beginners’ packages combining rental and lessons through to off-piste and freestyle workshops.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TO RENT?
We provide tiered levels of equipment quality for you to choose from when you’re renting. On top of this, having the Prefitted service available to you not only speeds up collection in resort, but will also help you understand what it is you’re renting. You’ll have a 20-minute fitting slot during Michaelmas when you can ask questions, receive advice and will have all your measurements taken. Those measurements then go out to resort for the hire shops to prepare the equipment for your arrival. Clothing and helmets are also delivered in resort, meaning you have more packing space.
Should I wear a helmet?
Yes. Palatinalps highly, highly recommends that everyone wears a helmet whilst on the hill (optional during après). Accidents can happen, regardless of skillset. These are available to rent for the week for a small sum if you don’t have your own.
i’m the best skier on the mountain. is there anything for me?
Yes. There’s a huge range of runs in our chosen resort, perfect for all abilities. We’re also hoping to bring back the highly-popular off-piste and freestyle workshops.
I’M A SNOWBOARDER.
You’re more than welcome! Rental covers snowboards and we have Snowboard Competitions, too.
DO I NEED INSURANCE?
Yes. You will not be able to book your trip without Insurance. You may provide details of your own Insurance policy at booking or elect to have your Insurance arranged by Wasteland.
WHAT ARE MY TRAVEL OPTIONS?
The trip base price includes coach transport with pickup available from Durham, London and Dover. If the coach isn’t for you, we also reserve a limited number of flights from London, with transport to and from the resort. If you want to make your own way to the resort, you will receive a discount on your trip cost.
HOW DO I UPGRADE?
When we open booking for Extras, you will be able to choose upgraded transport. The number of seats available is limited, so don’t hang around if you want to fly!
CAN I TRAVEL WITH MY FRIENDS?
Coaches are allocated based on College membership. You must travel on the coach to which you are allocated to assist Wasteland with keeping track of trip-goers. Who said 20 hours next to a stranger wasn’t the perfect way to make friends?
HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN I BRING?
If travelling by coach, you can bring a soft-sided bag weighing up to 20kg for the hold and a small carry-on for under the seat in front. You can bring your own skis or snowboard in an extra bag, free of charge, provided you’ve warned Wasteland beforehand. If you’re flying then you’ll have to respect airline policies on baggage weight limits and equipment carriage.
WHEN DO I FIND OUT MY DEPARTURE INFORMATION?
All final travel information will be sent to you via email at least a week prior to the trip.
CAN I CHOOSE WHERE I GET PICKED UP AND DROPPED OFF?
Yes. You can choose between Durham, London and Dover as pick up/drop off locations.
CAN I ORGANISE MY OWN TRANSPORT?
Yes – there is a price reduction on the base price if you make your own way there and back. There’s no one-way reduction. We also offer excellent value transfers to the resort from the airport if you organise your own flights.
HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT EVENTS ARE ON OFFER?
Events are one of the highlights of Palatinalps. Music-wise, we have a history of booking lineups with serious heat, be it for our universally-appreciated Opening and Final Night Parties or for Palatinalps Presents, our midweek series for that baseball-cap toting, hawaiian-shirt wearing BICEP boy we all wish we were(n’t). Our lineup releases are always awaited with borderline insanity, so keep an eye out for those on our Facebook and Instagram to make sure you’re in the loop. We’ll also be releasing our non-music Events in the run-up to Booking there.
HOW CAN I GET TICKETS?
Events tickets will be released soon after booking for the trip itself has opened on Tuesday 5th November.
WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE OBSCURE electronic TECHNO music?
Great! Palatinalps parties gained their fearsome reputation because they’re fun for all. Après is a great opportunity to hammer out Durham classics such as Boney M’s seminal hit ‘Daddy Cool’ or ABBA’s chart-topping ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’.
There will also be plenty of non-musical events for those with tired legs and sore ears.
WHAT IF I ONLY LIKE miami bass?
Great! Come along to Palatinalps Presents. Previous bookings include Jayda G, Peach, HAAi-, Dan Shake and Artwork (who can forget his impromptu 5am afterparty set for us in 2018?).
what extras are on offer?
As with our parties, we’ll be releasing details of these in the run-up to booking. In the past, this has included rides on helicopters or with huskies, mountain meals, paragliding, bottomless brunches, yoga sessions, laserquest, snowmobiling and a massive Bongo’s Bingo evening.
